Lazy weekend, rough week, another “with committee”…

June 8th, 2004 No comments

I didn’t make nearly as much progress with the Chicago essays this weekend as I would have liked to… Heck, I didn’t make any progress at all… I just couldn’t get my creative juices flowing… I guess part of it is because this was the first weekend in a long time where I didn’t have an immediate deadline looming over my head, so I could afford to kick back a bit… Mostly I think I just work better under pressure – no pressure, no productivity…

There’s been a heck of a lot going on in my life lately… I think I’m about to lose my mind trying to manage it all… Bhairavi says she’s surprised I’m holding up – I guess this goes back to that working well under pressure thing… I have stress from my incomplete Chicago application (which I’m trying to get done by June 15th), stress from planning a Put-in-Bay trip that a bunch of our college friends are hoping to take during the last week of June, stress from planning our trip to Europe in July (by the way, planning vacations and make reservations is probably more stress than the relaxation is worth!), stress from other issues my family is caught up in (which I’d rather not share with the entire internet community), stress from work (well, my stress is caused by my software application not being able to handle load), and a whole bunch of other “stress” in general… Hey, it feels good to vent!

Anyway, I’ll cut the rambling… This week is the week I should be hearing back from Carnegie Mellon… I checked my status yesterday morning and it still said my application was incomplete (waiting on a interview that I had given on May 27th). I then checked later in the afternoon (yes, it’s part of my status-checking ritual), and it said my application is complete and under review by the admissions committee… Carnegie Mellon says that they’ll mail the decisions as soon as they are made, and no later than June 14… So, I’m thinking that this week is the week for CMU!! Hopefully I’ll also hear from NYU this week, if not, maybe next…

The goal for this week: get something done with the Chicago essays! I’ll keep you all posted and let you know how that goes…:)

With Committee…

June 4th, 2004 No comments

While wading my way through the ocean of tasks I have to complete at work, I decided to take a break to check my application statuses… It has become an obsession now – I religiously check the statuses at least three to four times a day, just hoping for some news… It’s a very systematic process: I go through my bookmarks one by one; first Carnegie Mellon, then Michigan, and finally NYU… I quickly scan each screen for any change in text since the last iteration… In fact, one time I had my browser window smaller than usual so the text alignment was off – I was so excited, I had thought something changed… A closer reading revealed that all was as before…

Today something changed… The paragraph of text that explained that my application was being processed now states that my application is “with committee”… That means that throughout the next week or two some individuals in New York will read my application, hear my pleas to go to NYU, and pass judgment on my fate… Wow, that’s one heck of a way to think about it! I’m excited to say the least – I feel pretty good about my application… I hope I won’t have to eat these words later… No really, I hope that my application will stand out and that the ad com will say something like “Oh yeah, I remember Yash. He’s the guy with the creative video tape describing him”… Either that or they’ll say, “Yeah, I think Yash is the guy with weird colleagues and friends!”… Regardless, at least they’ll remember me!

I’m surprised that my status for Carnegie Mellon hasn’t been updated yet… I interviewed with them a little over a week ago, and my application still shows as incomplete… Things also look the same as always with Michigan… When I log into their system it doesn’t even show a status – it just shows my application, as it was when I submitted it… I wonder if I’ll get an e-mail from them or if they’ll update the online area (or both)… Come to think of it, one thing I’ve learned from this process is that relying on the e-mail systems is not the best way to get notification… It appears that changes on the website occur sooner than the time that you get the e-mail… In some cases (such as the change in my NYU status), you don’t get an e-mail at all…

Oh well, I’m rambling… So I’ll shut up, wrap up a couple of things at work, and head out for my weekend…:)

So tired… But must go on…

June 3rd, 2004 No comments

It’s been a hell of a week! For two nights in a row I’ve contemplated working on my Chicago essays when I get home, but it just hasn’t happened… I’ve been suffering from a stagnant headache for the last week or so, and it just won’t let me get any work done. I’m glad the weekend is almost here – if I sleep in on Saturday and get caught up on my rest, maybe I can still salvage the days between now and the Chicago interview (6/18).

So, why am I so tired? Well, it’s a little bit of everything… Between work, home, admissions, and friends, I’m barely staying afloat. This past weekend (Memorial weekend) a college friend of ours got married. We helped with wedding preparations and all the other events that go along with the typical Indian wedding… Needless to say, sleep was not a luxury afforded to us. The wedding events were also quite stressful (Murphy’s Law holds: everything can and will go wrong at the same time). However, we all survived, and I think Sanket and Morli, the newly wed couple, had a very memorable wedding… Mission accomplished…

So now, after my one week break from applications, I’m trying to get back on track. The Chicago essay question that has perplexed me the most is Please describe a recent change you experienced at work, discuss how you handled the situation, the outcome, and what you learned from the experience. (300 words). I’m sorry, my daily job just isn’t dynamic to the level that I’d write about in the essay… Sure a lot changes every day, but do you really think the ad com wants to hear my technical jargon? Then, on the other hand, there are the huge changes that are going on in the organization (restructuring)… But they’re so high up that it has no immediate impact on me, so there’s nothing to write about there either… What shall I do??!!

I’ll ponder this essay a little more… I’ll have to break ground on it soon or I’ll jeopardize the app altogether!

I’ll write about all the frustrations at work later…:)

Yash.

Here we go again….

June 1st, 2004 1 comment

Well, after several months of silence, I’ve decided to let the world hear my voice again – I’m breating new life into my blog… I guess I just got lazy last time… Actually, it was less laziness and more technical difficulties that suffocated my blogging days earlier… My server went (and is still) down… Blogspot is the temporary home for my blog – as soon as I find the time to get yash-patel back up, I’ll move my blog there…

I think I last posted around November of 2002, right before I went to India to get married… In a nutshell the last year and a half have been very dynamic… I’ve gotten married to the most beautiful woman I know, switched jobs, wrecked my car, bought some cool toys, and finally gotten serious about grad school (an MBA to be more specific)… No, I still haven’t “grown up”!

I decided to start blogging again because I wanted to give all my friends a central place to keep up with what’s happening with my grad school applications, and my life in general… I’m actually a little late in joining the game since I’m about done with 75% of my applications, but heck, it’s never too late to get started…

If I start writing about my apps now, I’ll ramble on and on until you fall off your chair with boredom… So instead I’ll make an effort to pace myself and give you little bits of info… Today I’ll simply tell you which four schools I’m applying to: University of Chicago – GSB (Graduate School of Business), Michigan Business School, New York University – Stern School of Business, and finally The Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon…

Over the next few days I’ll fill you in on what’s been going on… In the mean time I have to figure out how to use all the other features of Blogger!!
